From Theory to Undercover Reality at IUM Summer School
At the International University of Monaco, experiential learning is not just a teaching method, it is a real-world immersion. A prime example of this unique approach unfolded recently during the Summer School, where our Luxury Business & Communication track students transitioned from luxury retail theory to a practical simulation in Monte-Carlo.
The session began with an academic briefing on sensory marketing, focusing on how the strategic stimulation of the five senses creates emotional connections between consumers and premium brands. To prepare students for the practical application of these concepts, the university invited a rising industry insider to share insights.
Guest Lecture: John Kyle for APM Monaco
Students had the privilege of learning from John Kyle, an accomplished IUM alumnus currently managing Client Relations at APM Monaco, who brought with him a stellar professional background featuring icons like Jacquemus, Dolce & Gabbana, and Alexander McQueen.
Kyle shared invaluable, firsthand insights into the rapid growth of APM Monaco. Founded in 1982 with its first boutique opening in the Principality in 2012, the brand has witnessed a post-COVID boom, driven by top-tier digital marketing strategies and high-profile collaborations, such as the recent collection with F1 driver Charles Leclerc.
Reflecting on his journey, Kyle emphasized that working in Monaco is a rare privilege that opens unparalleled doors, but success ultimately boils down to the human element. He shared key takeaways on:
- The “Chic, Fun and Fashion” Philosophy: APM Monaco sets itself apart by targeting a youthful, vibrant demographic through dynamic media like TikTok, contrasting with the traditional, more rigid approach of heritage brands.
- Authenticity is the Ultimate Strategy: Kyle’s greatest advice to the students was simple: be honest. Authenticity, transparent communication about warranties, and price justification build lasting client relationships. “Never alter your personality for a client,” he noted. “Be yourself.”
- The Monégasque Touch: In-store, the team intentionally initiates conversations in French to embody and respect the local Monégasque identity, before seamlessly switching languages to accommodate international clients.

The Ultimate Test: Undercover Mystery Shopping in Monte-Carlo
Armed with theoretical frameworks of sensory marketing and freshly inspired by Kyle’s real-world anecdotes, the students faced their ultimate challenge: a real-time, undercover mystery shopping simulation.
Leaving the classroom behind, students headed into the glamorous city center of Monaco. Acting as high-end prospects, they stepped inside some of the world’s most exclusive luxury boutiques. This immersive fieldwork forced them to look past the glamour and critically evaluate the mechanics of luxury, analyzing how brands deploy sensory marketing in-store, from lighting and ambient scent to the psychological tactics and emotional connections established by the sales staff, all while maintaining their undercover status.
The IUM Advantage: Education You Can Live
This practical simulation serves as a prime example of what sets the IUM curriculum apart. The university offers a rare educational environment where advanced academic lectures are immediately tested through real-world applications in the heart of Monte-Carlo. Through this powerful combination of theory, guidance from successful alumni, and direct exposure to the market, students gain a seamless transition from classroom learning straight into the global luxury industry.
