Discovering the World’s Sports Capital

At IUM, we believe that the sports industry cannot be fully understood through textbooks alone. It must be felt, observed, and experienced in the field. Rooted in this philosophy of experiential learning, our Sports Business Management (SBM) students recently undertook an intensive study trip to London, one of the world’s preeminent sports capitals.

A 360-Degree View of the Sports Industry in London

The London itinerary offered a true immersion into the mechanics of event operations, brand strategy, legacy management, and commercial partnerships. Carefully designed, it covered every facet of the modern sports landscape:

Real-Time Strategic Analysis :Attending the UEFA Women’s Champions League clash between Arsenal and Chelsea was a highlight, blending passion with professional insight. Students closely observed the rapid growth of women’s football, evaluating live match operations and the fan experience.

Legacy and the Future : From the sacred grass of Wimbledon’s Centre Court, students explored the art of sports storytelling and fan engagement. In contrast, at the Formula E headquarters, the focus shifted to innovation, sustainability, and the digital future of global competitions.

High-Stakes Management and Operations :Visits to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the London Olympic Village provided a masterclass in infrastructure and legacy. Students analyzed how world-class venues generate revenue year-round and how the legacy of the 2012 London Olympics continues to shape urban development and community impact.

The Power of Agencies : Meetings with industry leaders at Octagon and Wasserman Next Gen gave students exclusive insights into athlete representation and global partnership negotiations. This direct access to decision-makers enabled high-level exchanges rarely possible in a traditional classroom setting.

Unique Opportunities

What sets IUM apart is our unrivaled network of alumni and industry partners. This trip was a testament to that community. Our students didn’t just visit buildings; they sat down with the experts who run them.

We extend our deepest gratitude to our partners and alumni, including Desislava Peycheva PhD, Clifford Bloxham, Tamara Ramos, Beatrice Buhannic Destefanis, and many others, who shared their time and wisdom. Their mentorship provides our students with a competitive edge, offering perspectives that are as current as the morning headlines.

Special thanks also go to Paul Hardy and Karina Mukanova, PhD, for their dedicated support and for guiding our students through this transformative journey.

Shaping the Future Leaders of Sport

At IUM, we don’t just prepare students for their first job; we prepare them for a career of leadership. By immersing them in the London sports ecosystem, we reinforce their passion and equip them with the practical insights needed to navigate a complex, fast-paced global industry.

This is experiential learning at IUM: where knowledge is not only taught, but tested in real contexts.
