Meet with Andrés Bonilla, a young, dynamic MBA student from Guatemala!

He is this year’s Student Representative for the MBA program.

Introduce yourself

My professional background is in the leisure and luxury hospitality & event management industry across Latin America. My educational background is in Sociology – with a particular focus on cultural identity formation, cross-cultural social dynamics, and group psychology. I have always loved and been fascinated by people, what makes them tick, and how best to create and facilitate space that brings out the best in others. My work in the hospitality and event management sector allowed me to hone my professional management skills and closely study all the sociological interactions and systems that fascinate me.

Why did you decide to join the Monaco MBA?

The IUM MBA provides two things that I value incredibly highly. Firstly, a truly international and professionally varied group of people from which to pool experience, make connections, and develop and work together. Secondly, it has real-world and practical experience in the highest levels of various industries, from niche super luxury firms to the international market’s biggest players. It’s both a melting pot and an international terminal to the professional world.

What are the strong features of this program?

I have always gravitated towards places, communities, and programs centered around self-development, both professionally and personally. Being surrounded by people who are also working and striving to better themselves inspires me and keeps me motivated to strive beyond who and what I currently am. This desire for professional and personal self-improvement is what continuously motivated me to fulfill my goals. The IUM MBA is very student-centered, a pedagogy that I align very strongly with, and one that allows me to thrive. The IUM MBA is training for the professional world, not just for one particular aspect of it.

What’s next on your bucket list?

  • Give a TED Talk on my sociological research into cultural identity formation.
  • Develop a course around my research
  • Start my own business in Guatemala.
  • Live in each continent for a period of at least a year.
  • Camp in Petra

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

My next 5 years will be a gauntlet of professional growth. I am looking forward to exploring all of the new opportunities that the IUM MBA will open for me, both in professional avenues where I already had an interest in, as well as new avenues that will be introduced to me through both the program and the countless connections (both personal and professional) that the MBA program naturally creates and fosters.
