Understanding Brand Strategy and Yacht Design in the Luxury Yachting Industry

In February 2026, students from the MSc in Luxury Yachting program at the International University of Monaco had the opportunity to attend two complementary sessions with Oceanco, one of the world’s leading shipyards specializing in fully customized luxury yachts. Together, the sessions provided a comprehensive perspective on the luxury yachting industry, from brand positioning and ecosystem dynamics to the technical and creative realities of yacht design.

The Luxury Yachting Ecosystem and the Importance of Momentum

The first session featured Paris Baloumis, Group Marketing Director at Oceanco, who visited IUM to discuss the brand, the broader yachting industry, and career opportunities within the sector.

Baloumis introduced students to the structure of the luxury yachting ecosystem, explaining how shipyards, designers, suppliers, brokers, and clients interact within a highly specialized and relationship-driven industry.

Beyond industry insights, the session also focused on professional development. One of the key messages he shared with students was the importance of taking initiative and building connections early in their careers.

Always speak to someone at the very first opportunity that you have, because that is the time. Any time afterwards becomes more difficult, awkward, and you lose the momentum

The advice highlighted a crucial reality of the luxury sector: networking, timing, and confidence often play a decisive role in accessing opportunities.

Inside the Yacht Design Process

The second session offered a more technical perspective through a guest talk with Oceanco designers Gilles Vernhet and Patrick Casanova. Their presentation provided students with a detailed look at the yacht design process and the challenges involved in transforming a client’s vision into a fully functional vessel.

More than a purely aesthetic discipline, yacht design was presented as a constant balance between creativity and engineering. Designers must combine artistic vision with strict technical requirements related to naval architecture, structural integrity, safety, and performance.

Students were introduced to several key phases of the design process, including naval architecture, engineering development, interior and exterior design, spatial circulation, and the organization of owner and crew areas. The speakers emphasized that development is rarely linear. Creative concepts often need to be adapted to technical constraints, making collaboration between designers and engineers essential throughout the project.

The Client at the Center of the Design Process

Another central theme of the discussion was the client’s role. In the luxury yachting market, purchasing a yacht is often a deeply personal and emotional decision. Designers, therefore, need to interpret clients’ expectations carefully, even when those expectations are not always clearly articulated.

Understanding the client’s lifestyle, preferences, and priorities is crucial to translating abstract ideas into a coherent, technically feasible project. This process requires not only technical expertise but also strong communication skills and the ability to manage complex collaborative workflows.

Key Takeaways for Future Professionals

The two sessions together offered students a valuable overview of the luxury yachting industry. While the first meeting highlighted the strategic and relational dimensions of the sector, including branding, networking, and industry structure, the second provided insight into the operational realities of yacht design and development.

Through these exchanges with Oceanco professionals, students gained a clearer understanding of the diverse skills required in the industry, where creativity, engineering expertise, strategic thinking, and human relationships all play a fundamental role in shaping some of the world’s most extraordinary vessels.
