Driving the future of Luxury

As part of IUM’s Career Week, an initiative designed to connect students with industry professionals, the university welcomed Guido Giovannelli, an experienced leader in the luxury automotive sector with over 30 years of international career experience.

The event offered students a valuable opportunity to gain first-hand insights into one of the most competitive and evolving industries, while also reflecting on their own future career paths.

A Career Built on Adaptability

Giovannelli began his journey as an aeronautical engineer, driven by a passion for aviation. However, his path soon evolved as he transitioned into the automotive industry, later moving into commercial roles with brands. Today, he is part of BPM Group, one of the most successful automotive groups in Monaco.

A defining element of his career has been international mobility. Having worked across different countries, he highlighted how travelling is not just a professional asset but a transformative experience. Exposure to diverse cultures helps develop adaptability, emotional intelligence, and the ability to navigate complex global markets, skills that are increasingly essential for young professionals.

Inside the World of Luxury Automotive

During the session, Giovannelli introduced students to BPM Exclusive one of Europe’s leading luxury automotive retailers. The group distributes iconic brands such as Ferrari, Bentley, Mercedes-Benz, Aston Martin, Rolls-Royce and many others.

Operating in Monaco, a market where automotive culture plays a central role, the company serves an international clientele with extremely high expectations. To meet these standards, BPM Exclusive focuses on proximity and service excellence, offering personalized solutions such as vehicle pick-up and delivery.

Bespoke Service Meets Community Hubs

In the high-end automotive segment, the shift from product-centric sales to experience-driven retail has turned personalization and physical space into vital strategic pillars. As Giovannelli points out, leading brands now go far beyond selling vehicles, focusing instead on delivering tailored experiences; yet, this bespoke approach faces the constant challenge of brand coherence, where every customization must remain strictly aligned with the manufacturer’s core identity.

This philosophy is seamlessly integrated into the physical environment at BPM Exclusive, where showrooms have evolved from transactional spaces into vibrant community hubs. By incorporating dedicated lounges and social areas, these spaces foster genuine relationship-building, inviting customers to visit not just for a purchase, but to connect, network, and hold meetings, effectively redefining the dealership as a cornerstone of the luxury lifestyle.

A Data-Driven and Fast-Changing Industry

Giovannelli also addressed the rapid transformation of the automotive sector, driven by major trends such as electrification and autonomous driving.

In this context, adaptability is crucial, not only in operations but also in marketing strategies. “What worked two years ago may no longer be relevant today,” he explained, underlining the importance of continuous innovation.

The industry is also highly data-driven. From customer interactions to sales performance, every process is measured through detailed KPIs. This level of precision is necessary in a market where profit margins are currently very low, around 1%, making strategic decisions and execution critical.

Key Advice for IUM Students

Throughout the session, Giovannelli shared practical advice directly relevant to students preparing to enter the job market.

One of his key messages was the importance of listening: truly understanding customers requires attention and observation rather than constant communication.

He also encouraged students to follow their passions, particularly in demanding industries like automotive. Passion, he noted, is not optional, it is what sustains motivation and performance in a highly competitive environment.

Finally, he highlighted the openness of companies like BPM Group to young talent, inviting students to actively pursue opportunities and contribute to shaping the future of the industry.

Strengthening the Link Between Education and Employment

This session perfectly reflects the objective of IUM Career Week: to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional reality. By engaging directly with experienced professionals like Guido Giovannelli, students gain not only industry knowledge but also a clearer vision of the skills and mindset required to succeed.
