Jordan Mercien’s Journey from IUM to AS Monaco Basket-Ball

MSc in Sports Business Management, 2018

Event & Hospitality Manager at AS Monaco Basket-Ball S.A. (ROCA TEAM)

“The MSc in Sports Business Management at IUM provided me with invaluable real-world experience through major events and a powerful industry network. It shaped my career, giving me hands-on skills, professional mentorship, and connections that opened doors in the sports business world.”

IN HIS OWN WORDS:

What aspect of your educational journey contributed most to your professional success?

One of the most valuable aspects of my education at IUM was the opportunity to gain hands-on experience by working at major sporting events while still pursuing my studies. Being involved in world-class events such as the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, and the Historic Grand Prix allowed me to immerse myself in the sports business world from an early stage. This practical exposure gave me a deeper understanding of the industry’s operations, the challenges of event management, and the importance of delivering excellence in a high-pressure environment. Additionally, the insights and discussions with professors, particularly Prof. Dr. Klaus, were instrumental in shaping my approach to the business side of sports. His expertise in customer experience helped me develop a strong appreciation for the nuances of fan engagement, hospitality, and service excellence—essential factors in creating memorable sporting experiences. This combination of real-world exposure and academic learning provided me with the skills, knowledge, and network necessary to thrive in the industry today.

Can you share a specific experience or moment that made you realize the value of the education you received?

One key moment that made me truly appreciate the value of my MSc in Sports Business Management at IUM was during my internship at Peace and Sport in the Field Programs department. I was honored to be the first and only intern ever asked to join another department—the Events team—because a major event was approaching, and my skills were needed. This opportunity was a direct result of the practical knowledge and experience I had gained during my studies, particularly through hands-on involvement in major sporting events like the Rolex Masters and Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix. Thanks to IUM’s strong emphasis on real-world learning and industry exposure, I was able to quickly adapt, take on new responsibilities, and contribute meaningfully to the event’s success. This experience reinforced how well my MSc Sports Business Management had prepared me—not just in terms of industry expertise, but also in versatility, problem-solving, and the ability to perform under pressure in a fast-paced environment. It was a defining moment that proved the impact of my education on my professional journey.

How did the program at IUM prepare you for the job market?

The MSc in Sports Business Management at IUM provided me with a strong foundation to enter the job market by combining academic excellence with real-world experience. One of the biggest advantages was learning from highly skilled and recognized professionals in the sports industry, who brought invaluable insights and practical knowledge into the classroom. Beyond theory, the program emphasized hands-on learning through direct involvement in major sporting events. I had the opportunity to work not only on the Rolex Masters and the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, but also on prestigious industry events such as the Peace and Sport International Forum and Sportel, the world’s largest sports media and technology convention. These experiences gave me first-hand exposure to different aspects of the sports business, from event management to networking with key industry players. Additionally, the program’s strong industry connections allowed us to work on a final project directly with a major Formula E team, where we had the chance to present our ideas to their executives and receive direct feedback—a unique and invaluable experience. Lastly, the IUM network played a crucial role in launching my career. Thanks to the connections I built through the university, I secured both my internship and my first job immediately after graduation. The combination of practical experience, industry exposure, and a powerful professional network made the transition into the job market seamless and set me up for long-term success in the sports business industry.
