As part of the International University of Monaco’s Career Week, the university welcomed Filippo Ghirelli, founder of Infracorp, Sophrance Global, and Mareterra, for a special CEO Series session. A global entrepreneur with a dynamic career spanning renewable energy, oil and gas, aviation, and space infrastructure, Ghirelli shared his insights on critical thinking, the impact of artificial intelligence, and the future of infrastructure.

During the session, students had the opportunity to engage directly with Ghirelli, discussing real-world challenges and exploring how innovation and strategic thinking shape global industries. His talk emphasized the importance of adaptability, ethical decision-making, and forward-looking leadership in today’s fast-changing world.

This session was part of IUM’s broader Career Week, designed to connect students with top executives, provide industry insights, and foster networking opportunities for future careers in business, finance, and technology.

A Career Built on Vision and Resilience

Ghirelli recounted his journey from early ventures in energy efficiency and biofuels to leading large-scale projects in oil refining and desalination. He emphasized that entrepreneurship arises from identifying real-world problems that are both meaningful and necessary.

“You only become an entrepreneur once you figure out something that is both necessary and meaningful to you,” he explained, stressing the importance of passion combined with problem-solving.

His ventures span from transforming European energy operations to pioneering orbital data centers and space modules. Today, through Infracorp, he develops systemic infrastructure projects that integrate aviation, space, and decentralized AI, always focusing on user experience and long-term value creation.

Critical Thinking as a Core Skill

One of the most impactful themes of the session was critical thinking. Ghirelli encouraged students to question assumptions, analyze information carefully, and avoid blindly following popular opinion. He illustrated this with historical examples, emphasizing that true leadership requires curiosity, reading, and the ability to distinguish memory from history.

“AI will reshape the job market, but the only way to thrive is to cultivate critical thinking and influence,” he noted, urging students to prepare for a future that demands adaptability and intellectual independence.

Infrastructure as Experience

Ghirelli also shared Infracorp’s innovative approach to infrastructure. Rather than seeing airports or data centers as purely functional, he described them as temporary destinations designed to deliver memorable experiences.

For example, the redevelopment of Riviera Airport near Monaco focuses on creating a showroom environment with luxury cars, art, and fine dining—transforming aviation terminals into spaces of comfort and prestige.

This philosophy reflects a broader trend: infrastructure is increasingly about shaping experiences and communities, not just serving utility.

Key Advice for IUM Students

Throughout the session, Filippo Ghirelli offered practical guidance for students preparing to enter the professional world:

  • Trust and teamwork : Success comes from building strong teams and earning trust.
  • Passion and need : Entrepreneurship must align with both personal passion and societal demand.
  • Action before motivation : Motivation follows from taking action, not the other way around.
  • Limits and authenticity : Recognize personal limits and strive for excellence within them.

He also encouraged students to read widely, learn from history, and embrace discomfort as a way to grow.

Bridging Education and Professional Reality

Filippo Ghirelli’s CEO Series session perfectly embodied the mission of IUM Career Week : connecting academic learning with real-world experience. By engaging directly with a leader who has built companies across diverse sectors and geographies, students gained not only industry insights but also a deeper understanding of the mindset required to succeed in a rapidly evolving global economy.
