Under the High Patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco
The second Model United Nations in Monaco
On April 13, 2012, students from the International University of Monaco have organized the second Model United Nations (MUN) in Monaco, under the supervision of Dr. Marie-José Rinaldi-Larribe, program director of the Master in International Business and Global Affairs and of the Master in International Business and Trade.
The IUM team is honored to have been granted the High Patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco once again, for this outstanding event in the heart of the Principality.
This event was the second model UN organized in Monaco, under the authority of the UN office for Europe in Brussels, represented by Mr. J-Pierre Bugada.
The Model UN is a simulation game aiming to educate students about current world events, geopolitical challenges and multilateral diplomacy, which brings together students from different backgrounds to find global solutions to the critical issue of the access to water.
Through this simulation of a UN General Assembly, students have discussed means to tackle this crucial issue of water access, through diplomatic ways, by proposing solutions and using their negotiation skills; the objective was to draft a UN resolution, on which delegations have voted at the end of the day. The aim was to generate innovative ideas and proposals among the 52 participants, from IUM but also from other Schools and Universities of the region.
The event was sponsored by the Direction des Affaires Internationales de Monaco, represented by its Director, Isabelle Costa, and by the companies ES-KO and Société Monégasque des Eaux. Observers from international organizations and NGOs have evaluated the delegations’ respect for United Nations protocol and behavior, diplomacy, as well as their negotiation skills.
At the end of this fruitful day, a resolution was passed, with many interesting and innovative proposals, and Mrs. Isabelle Bonnal, Director of National Education in Monaco, closed the debates with a speech congratulating the participants.
The three best delegations were chosen by the observers, and a donation of 1000 euros was made to the Monegasque Red Cross, which will partly finance a project related to water access in a developing country.
The winning teams are delegations representing India (1st prize, given to IUM students), Canada (2nd prize, Skema), Brazil and Somalia (ex aequo, 3rd prize, IUM students).
We congratulate them all!
