The 2007 Summer School in Mathematics for Finance at the International University of Monaco (IUM) is an intensive
program open to the general public as well as to current and prospective IUM students. It is addressed to students and
professionals wishing to enhance their understanding of modern finance and to develop some quantitative tools currently
applied in financial analysis.
The program will take place at the IUM from August 16 to September 4. It is divided into five mod-ules and is comprised
of a total of 56 hours of class time. Classes will take place in the morning, from 8:30 to 1:00, Monday through Friday.
Students are expected to study and complete homework as-signments outside of class.
Each of the five modules will make extensive use of computer applications, especially spreadsheets. Therefore
applicants are expected to be computer literate. Some familiarity with differential calculus and statistical analysis
(such as is provided by an undergraduate business degree) is desirable. Stu-dents must be proficient in oral and
written English.
Upon completion of this program, students will be able to: analyze several financial assets and in-vestment funds in
terms of their risk and expected return, carry out a statistical analysis of any finan-cial time series, simulate stock
prices on a spreadsheet, understand the main principles by which op-tions and other derivatives are priced and traded.
On the first day of class students will receive an IUM USB memory key containing all the study ma-terials (lecture
notes, PowerPoint presentations, articles, spreadsheets). Students who successfully complete the Summer School in
Mathematics for Finance will be awarded the IUM certificate of completion.
